Do you know why cats are so crazy for catnip?
First let’s answer the question, “what exactly is catnip?”
Scientifically known as Nepeta cataria is most commonly referred to by the name catnip and may also be called catswort or catmint. It is a perennial herb belonging to the mint family (Labiatae). Originally grown in Mediterranean soils, native to Europe as well as southwestern to central Asia, this weed-like mint is now common in North America and Canada. Catnip is absolutely natural, safe, and non-addictive. From your basic house cats and domesticated tabby cats to lions & tigers, catnip is known to have quite an effect on behavior.
A cat’s crazy response to catnip comes from the attraction to its natural volatile oil called Napetalactone, an unsaturated lactone that seems to do for some cats what marijuana is known to do for some people. Napetalactone is thought to mimic the effects of a pheromone to cause varying behaviors, arousing all five senses. With a whiff of catnip, cats react with a range of behaviors including sniffing, licking, biting, chewing, head shaking, head rolling, and body rubbing. This euphoric state can appear to be aggressive playfulness while for other may be mellow and calm. For most cats the reaction to catnip lasts on average 10 minutes. Interestingly enough, cats need a break of about an hour or two before another reaction will occur. Because the majority of cats respond to catnip, this herb makes a very powerful cat training aid. Using catnip, you can keep your kitty from clawing furniture, by rubbing cat nip on a scratching post to making it more attractive to your cat. Want your cat to use her new cat bed? Put some catnip on the cushion.
A cats’ reaction to catnip is found in all species but may not be found in all cats. Kittens less than 3 months do not have a reaction to cat nip, you will also find that senior cats do not respond as much if at all. 10 – 30% of the cat population does not respond to catnip, at any age. The reaction is hereditary and some cats have a genetic deposition to catnip while other will not.
The potency of catnip can dissipate over time. When using dried catnip, store in the unused portion in your freezer or a safe, cool, dark place.
Use in moderation: Although catnip is safe, non-addictive and according to scientific research has no long term effect – keep in mind that if you cat is eating lots of fresh catnip, overdoing it, though rare, can lead to vomiting and diarrhea.
